Creation and Instruction

You’ll learn how to instruct students in accessing, evaluating, using and integrating information and resources. In addition, you’ll gain increased responsibilities, including choosing resources, developing programs and providing support to peers/faculty. The program is ideal for educators who wish to instruct others in multiple literacies while maintaining a classroom/instructor role. National Board Certification Coursework

Optional support coursework is offered for students interested in pursuing National Board Certification in Library Media. Those that are interested in only taking the support coursework for National Board Certification do not need to complete the entire program.

School Library and Information Technology Curriculum

The following courses are required as part of your School Library and Information Technology degree curriculum:

LIB 705 – Information Technologies 3 Units
This course enables candidates to become technologically competent teacher librarians. Throughout the course, candidates will learn how to evaluate and effectively use a variety of information and communication technology (ICT) resources that are essential to the school library program. Students will also explore the application of learning theory to a digital environment.

LIB 710 – Instructional Partnerships 3 Units
This course provides an overview of the mission of the school library media program and the instructional partner and teacher roles of the teacher librarian. Students will investigate and use a variety of instructional strategies and assessment tools in collaboration with classroom teachers and educational partners to plan a unit based upon school library standards, academic content standards and learners’ interests and diverse needs.

LIB 715 – Administration of the School Media Center 3 Units
This course prepares students to fulfill the program administrator and leadership roles of the teacher librarian. They will develop and implement policies, procedures and services to successfully manage the school media center and its personnel. A variety of professional resources and research are introduced to enable candidates to advocate for effective school library programs.

LIB 720 – Selection and Organization of Learning Resources 3 Units
This course prepares candidates to evaluate, select and organize physical, digital and virtual learning resources. Candidates will gain skills to develop, manage and provide equitable access to a collection of resources designed to meet the diverse needs of the school community. Prerequisites: Take LIB 715

LIB 725 – Information Services 3 Units
This course prepares candidates to provide information services within the school library program. Information services include the selection and use of reference materials in seeking answers to questions, facilitation of students’ independent access and evaluation of sources of information, and the modeling and communication of the ethical and legal use of information. Prerequisites: Take LIB-720

LIB 732 – Evaluation and Promotion of Children’s Literature 3 Units
This course focuses upon the reading and evaluation of a variety of genres and formats of children’s literature for use within the school library program. Students will evaluate, design and engage in a variety of activities to promote the reading of children’s literature and collaborate with educational partners to reinforce literacy instruction in addressing the diverse needs and interest of all learners.

LIB 736 – Evaluation and Promotion of Young Adult Literature 3 Units
This course focuses upon the reading and evaluation of a variety of genres and formats of young adult literature for use within the school library program. Candidates will evaluate, design, and engage in a variety of activities to promote the reading of young adult literature and collaborate with educational partners to reinforce literacy instruction in addressing the diverse needs and interests of all learners.

LIB 740 – Digital Literacy 3 Units
This course focuses upon the use of digital technologies to design, implement and evaluate standards-based learning experiences for diverse student populations. Special emphasis is placed upon the modeling and communication of the ethical, legal and safe use of information and technology, including digital citizenship, to all educational stakeholders. Prerequisites: LIB 710 LIB 720 LIB 725

LIB 792 – Field Studies in School Librarianship 3 Units
This course serves as the capstone experience for the teacher librarian program. Students will expand their knowledge of school librarianship by engaging in 105 hours of a variety of field experience activities. Candidates will focus upon implementing activities that were introduced or designed in previous courses and will reflect upon their professional learning by completing an ePortfolio that demonstrates how they have met each Teacher Librarian PSLO. Prerequisites: Take LIB-740; Students may take up to two semesters to complete the course; Graded C/NC; May not be audited

LIB 794 - Field Study: National Board Certification Library Media Component 2 1 Unit
For candidates that are currently working in a K-12 school library and have successfully registered for National Board Certification Component 2 in Library Media. Each candidate will be assigned a mentor who will provide individualized support in completing the requirements for the Component 2 Portfolio Entry-Differentiation in Instruction. Passage of this course does not guarantee passage of the National Board Component. For candidates not seeking the California Teacher Librarian Services Credential, successful completion of LIB 794, 795, and 796 may be substituted for LIB 792: Field Studies in School Librarianship.

LIB 795 - Field Study: National Board Certification Library Media Component 3 1 Unit
For candidates that are currently working in a K-12 school library and have successfully registered for National Board Certification Component 3 in Library Media. Each candidate will be assigned a mentor who will provide individualized support in completing the requirements for the Component 3 Portfolio Entry: Teaching Practice and Learning Environment. Passage of this course does not guarantee passage of the National Board Component. For candidates not seeking the California Teacher Librarian Services Credential, successful completion of LIB 794, 795, and 796 may be substituted for LIB 792: Field Studies in School Librarianship.

LIB 796 - Field Study: National Board Certification Library Media Component 4 1 Unit
For candidates that are currently working in a K-12 school library and have successfully registered for National Board Certification Component 4 in Library Media. Each candidate will be assigned a mentor who will provide individualized support in completing the requirements for the Component 4 Portfolio Entry: Effective and Reflective Practitioner. Passage of this course does not guarantee passage of the National Board Component. For candidates not seeking the California Teacher Librarian Services Credential, successful completion of LIB 794, 795, and 796 may be substituted for LIB 792: Field Studies in School Librarianship.

MA Capstone

ED 779 – Values in School and Society 3 Units
This course focuses on a cultural, historical, philosophical and/or social analysis of schools and schooling as a basis for developing an understanding of the educator’s role as a change agent and as a basis for personal and professional decision-making. The university’s philosophy and values, as expressed in the Fresno Pacific Idea, and their implications for schools and society will provide one perspective for such analysis. When taken as part of the educational technology program, special emphasis will be given to technology issues in context to the topics of the course.

EDRH 794 – Thesis Introduction and Literature Review 3 Units
This is the initial course for students whose research will culminate in the completion of a master's thesis. Students will be involved in a supervised independent inquiry of study built upon a literature review. Along with the course instructor, they will work with an assigned thesis mentor who will guide and support the student through the development and writing of a literature review and the introductory chapter of the thesis.

EDRH 795 – Research Methods in Education 3 Units
The course focuses on a study in the nature of the systematic inquiry, a survey of methods employed in research and an explanation of evaluation methodology, as well as the use of research and evaluation methods in actual school situations. Topics include identification of education research problems, use of library resources, data gathering and processing, and evaluation of research articles. Prerequisites: Take EDRH-794 ED-777A ADM-798 SPEC-798 LIB-798 MED-798 PPS-798 or PPS-777A;

EDRH 796 – Thesis Completion 1 Unit
This course is designed to assist students in the completion of their master's thesis. Students will work alongside an assigned thesis mentor to finalize the (1) Institutional Review Board application, (2) collect and analyze data, (3) report findings and (4) make recommendations. This is the final course leading to a Master of Arts degree. Prerequisites: Take EDRH-795. Students may take up to two semesters to complete the course; Graded C/NC; May not be audited.  

EDRH 790 – Continuous Registration 0 Units
Students who do not complete EDRH-796 at the end of the second semester are required to register for continuous registration each semester until the project/thesis has been satisfactorily completed. Registration for EDRH-790 is equivalent to 1 unit of tuition.Signature required; May not be audited
