Admissions Requirements

Computer Information Systems Curriculum

The following courses are required as part of your Computer Information Systems Degree.

CIS-302 Discrete Structures. 3 Units.
The study and application of counting techniques, propositional logic, mathematical induction, set theory, recursive equations, graphs, trees, and Boolean algebra for algorithms in computing.

CIS-312. Introduction to Computer Information Systems. 3 Units.
Review a survey of computer information systems as used in business and industry. Topics include: Hardware; operating systems; networks and communication; database management and other applications; programming; security and data management, and ethical concerns and practices in the field.

CIS-320 Computer Programming for Information Systems. 3 Units.
The study of computer programming for information systems applications, highlighting data and control structures, using a current programming language.

Prerequisite: CIS-302 and CIS-312.

CIS-330 Operating Systems. 3 Units.
An examination of systems architecture and control in computers dealing specifically with operating systems. Emphasis is placed on organization, use, configuration, capabilities and security of operating systems.

Prerequisite: CIS-312.

CIS-340 Data Communications and Networks. 3 Units.
An assessment of the fundamentals of data communication and networking. This course highlights network structure, performance and security and their roles in information systems solutions.

Prerequisite: CIS-330.

CIS-352 Systems Analysis and Design. 3 Units.
The study of the computing methods and technologies available to implement strategy and conduct operations in modern businesses. Emphasis is placed on the process of identifying and specifying requirements to solve business problems.

Prerequisite: CIS-320.

CIS-380. Database Management. 3 Units.
An analysis of the management of data and information. Focus is on relational databases and queries, joins, views, indexing, sequences, and security.

Prerequisite: CIS-320.

CIS-390 Ethics in Computing. 2 Units.
A focus on the social and ethical issues in computer information systems development and practice, including support for quality, security, and privacy.

Prerequisite: CIS-312.

CIS-392 Computer Information Systems Project Proposal. 1 Unit.
Design and development of a project idea in a computer information systems application. An approved formal proposal is the required outcome of this course.

Prerequisite: CIS-320, CIS-352, CIS-380.

CIS-440 Systems and Network Security. 2 Units.
The study of information security and assurance as key components in information systems and networked solutions. Security planning as part of management process with emphasis on protection, response and feasibility in safeguarding an organization’s information and operations.

Prerequisite: CIS-340.

CIS-457 Information Systems Project Management. 3 Units.
The review of the development and management practices utilized in information systems projects and processes, including various techniques and their assessments under different environments.

Prerequisite: CIS-390.

CIS-480 Application Development with Database. 3 Units.
In-depth study of advanced topics in relational databases including opportunities for students to create database applications to address information management needs and address related issues. Increased emphasis is placed on security, productivity, performance and recovery.

Prerequisites: CIS-380 and CIS-390.

CIS-490 Computer Information Systems Project. 1 Unit.
Participation in a cooperative experience with a local industry or nonprofit to address a computer information system need via a team-based project. Students work with project coordinators to discuss planning and implementation progress. Students will present their experiences and results to the FPU community.

Prerequisites: CIS-352, CIS-392, CIS-457, and CIS-480.

BIB 314 - Jesus and the Christian Community. 3 Units.

The foundation course for all undergraduate students at FPU, that focuses on Jesus, his teachings, the community he founded and the early years of the Christian movement. More than simply a traditional Bible class, it provides students with both academic and practical opportunities for learning and growth within the broader community of the degree completion program. The interactive approach to learning moves students beyond basic knowledge and understanding to doing, living and being.

BIB-455 Biblical Perspectives for Computing Professionals. 3 Units
Recommended prior coursework: BIB 314. This course is a unique blend of study in the Bible with an eye toward key aspects in relation to being “the people of God.” As such, it is neither strictly Bible survey nor merely a topics course. Specific passages have been selected to promote improvement of skills for reading and understanding the bible (the act of interpretation). Choices have been made to cover a range of literature, styles and time periods, and are representative of other larger blocks of biblical material. Texts have also been chosen to correspond to topics key to understanding the dynamics of community living and to consideration of service in addressing problems in the world with these texts and contexts. Topics explored include humanity, community beginning, ordering, service, fragmentation, coherence and power. Both textual and topical aspects need to be kept in creative tension. Skills, creative thinking and application are all equally a goal. This comes from the position of the university that we hold scripture as authoritative for life, hence one should not be diminished or promoted at the expense of the other.
